The goal of the game
The goal of blackjack is simple: total more than the dealer without going over 21. You don't compete against other players, only against the house. If your cards total more than theirs (and neither goes over 21), you win; if you bust over 21, you lose immediately, even if the dealer busts afterward.
Card values
Cards 2 to 10 are worth their number. Face cards (J, Q, K) are worth 10. The Ace is worth 1 or 11, whichever helps you most; that's why a hand with an Ace is "soft" (it can change value without busting). An Ace with a 10-value card on the first two cards is blackjack and usually pays 3:2.
How a hand is played
You get two cards and see one of the dealer's. From there you decide:
- Hit — take another card to get closer to 21.
- Stand — keep your total.
- Double — double your bet and take exactly one more card.
- Split — if you have a pair, separate it into two hands.
The dealer plays last with fixed rules: typically hits to 16 and stands on 17. That rigidity is what basic strategy exploits.
Basic strategy (summary)
Basic strategy is the mathematically optimal play for each combination of your hand and the dealer's up-card. These golden rules cover most cases:
- Always stand on 17 or more.
- With 12–16, stand if the dealer shows 2–6 (a weak card); hit if they show 7 or more.
- Double on 11 almost always, and on 10 if the dealer shows 9 or less.
- Always split Aces and 8s; never split 10s or 5s.
Applied with discipline, basic strategy cuts the house edge to around 0.5% in the most common variants, one of the lowest in the casino.
